Other Guides to this Story

The sixth Doctor is brash, stubborn, and often condescending and arrogant. He wears a bright multi-coloured coat.

Perpugilliam "Peri" Brown is an American botany student from the 1980s who decided to join the Doctor on his travels during Planet of Fire. In The Caves of Androzani, the fifth Doctor sacrificed himself to save her life. She stayed with the newly regenerated Doctor in The Twin Dilemma despite post-regeneration trauma that led him to attempt to strangle her.

Recurring and Historical Characters

Whilst no actual historical characters are seen in this novel, Julius Caesar, the Roman leader who turned the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire, Mark Anthony (another prominent Roman leader of the period), Cleopatra (Queen of Egypt, descended from Greeks, who was a lover of both men), and Alexander the Great (Greek king who conquered most of the Middle East, going as far as the Indus Valley) are all quite important to the background of the society we see.

Spoiler: Highlight to view

The Rani is a Time Lady and an amoral scientist. She previously encountered the Doctor and Peri in Mark of the Rani, where she was harvesting chemicals from humans during the Industrial Revolution.

If you don't recognise the recurring character who turns up partway through the book, open the spoiler above to find out more about their previous appearance(s)..
