Doctor Who: The Newbies Guide

The Space Museum

This is the seventh story in Season Two.

Where does this fit?

This happens in sequence with the rest of the season.

Doctor

The first Doctor looks like a human in his sixties. He is physically quite frail, but has a keen intellect. He is paternalistic towards his companions, and has a degree of arrogance towards others. He sometimes forgets his companions' names, especially Ian Chesterton's surname.

Companion(s)

Ian Chesterton is a science teacher from Coal Hill School, 1963. In An Unearthly Child he and colleague Barbara Wright were intrigued by the strange behaviour of one of their pupils, Susan Foreman. They followed her home to a junkyard where Susan and the Doctor had parked the TARDIS. In a confrontation with the Doctor they forced their way into the TARDIS. The Doctor took exception to this and whisked them away. Later in the story, he realised he was wrong to do so and decided to try to get them home. During The Edge of Destruction the TARDIS attempted to communicate with its crew telepathically, causing the Doctor to accuse Ian and Barbara of sabotaging the ship. However, when the Doctor realised that they were not responsible, his relationship with them warmed considerably.

Vicki Pallister was an orphaned teenager in the 25th Century. She had been a passenger on a spaceship that crashed on the planet Dido. By the time she met the first Doctor in The Rescue there were only two survivors left. When the other survivor, a man called Bennett, was killed by the natives in revenge for his attack on them, the Doctor and his travelling companions Ian and Barbara offered Vicki a chance to travel with them on the TARDIS.

Recurring and Historical Characters

The Daleks are a race of mutants encased in powerful cyborg bodies whose shape is reminiscent of pepperpots. The Doctor first encountered them on their home planet of Skaro in The Daleks. In that story, they were confined to a single city on Skaro and the Doctor thought he had defeated them forever. He later encountered them in The Dalek Invasion of Earth, where they had conquered the planet Earth. During that story, he defeated them again.
